A new study has found that foods with high fat and sugar content are the most addictive

Is anyone really that surprised that pizza is way more addictive than celery?

Why is it that it’s so easy to skip out on vegetables, but so difficult to kick the fast food habit? We always suspected that sugar and fat were addictive, but now we have scientific evidence to back that up. A new study from Dr. Nicole Avena of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has tested and ranked various food items in order of addictiveness. The least addictive foods on the list, like apples, beans, brown rice, cucumbers, and carrots, are all natural, unprocessed foods that are low in fat and sugar compared to the most addictive foods on the list. Unsurprisingly, our biggest food crutches are pizza, chocolate, potato chips, cookies, and ice cream. Nature can be unfair sometimes. It would be much healthier if we could be addicted to cucumbers rather than chocolate.

It should be noted, however, that the study is based on anecdotal evidence from 500 participants who revealed their problem foods. The results, then, should not be shocking. We’ve never heard of anyone who was addicted to apples or carrots, after all.

Avena is hoping that the results of her study will help to diagnose and treat binge eating disorder and food addiction, and will provide more evidence that certain foods may be as habit-forming as drugs. We already know that Oreos can be just as addictive as cocaine.

"This could help change the way we approach obesity treatment,” said Avena in a statement. “It may not be a simple matter of 'cutting back' on certain foods, but, rather, adopting methods used to curtail smoking, drinking and drug use."


What Are the Top 5 Most Addictive Drugs?

For decades, researchers have ranked the most addictive drugs in the world. A variety of factors influence the addictiveness of a substance, such as the degree of tolerance a person develops after repeated use and the intensity of the drug’s withdrawal symptoms.

The most addictive drugs can cause widespread addiction and public health problems. A number of researchers have conducted studies to rank the addictiveness of specific drugs using a variety of factors.

In 2007, British psychiatrist David Nutt and a team of addiction experts investigated the most harmful drugs. In a study published in The Lancet, Nutt’s team assessed the harm, dependence and potential misuse associated with 20 drugs.

Addictive drugs exert significant changes on the central nervous system. Substances such as alcohol and heroin increase dopamine levels in the brain, producing euphoric effects. Over time, drug use can cause compulsive behavior, dependence and severe withdrawal symptoms.

Movies and TV shows extol the accomplishments of high-end cat burglars. From Ocean’s 11 to Now You See Me, we all love to root for the bad guy with good intentions. But no one’s a fan of the jerks who break into the homes of hardworking citizens and steal the high-end treasures we worked really hard to afford. What’s making your home so appealing to thieves?

Houses near common offenders

If you live near a large population of young people, in a neighborhood with a higher-than-average drug problem, an area with already high urban crime or places that bring in a large number of strangers (e.g., shopping centers, sports arenas, transit stations, a major thoroughfare), you’re more vulnerable to burglary, because burglars may be more familiar with potential targets, and residents are accustomed to strangers.

Low-traffic areas

Homes on the outskirts of neighborhoods are more vulnerable, because fewer neighbors will be able to see if a crime is being committed. This includes dead-end streets, cul-de-sacs and locations with few outlets. Any house that’s secluded may also be a target.

Corner homes are iffy. They allow thieves to scope the area (including your habits) easily by simply driving by and naturally slowing or stopping for a turn. Depending on your neighborhood’s layout, they may also be less visible to neighbors and police.

Previously burglarized homes or homes near one

If you’ve already been burglarized, chances are, another thief will find you equally as vulnerable as the first one did. Additionally, the original thief may come back if he wasn’t caught the first time. If he doesn’t come back for you, he may come back to your neighbors, because he considers it a successful area.

Places to hide

The way your house is landscaped or built can make your home attractive to thieves. They like places to hide. Bushes growing under windows and low-hanging trees are a thief’s best friend. What they aren’t fans of are prickly landscaping and anything that makes noise, like rocks or gravel.

They may also target homes that have architectural features that make it easy. Solid fencing (especially privacy fences) and features that obscure a door or window are popular choices.

Empty homes

About 60 percent of home burglaries happen during the daytime, and most of those are during the workweek. That’s right… while you’re at work. Most thieves don’t target occupied houses.

They also get a bit giddy when they see overgrown yards, mail or papers piling up, a sign you’re on vacation.

Not surprisingly, on average, homes that are burglarized tend to be homes that have no dogs. Large dogs may present a physical threat, but don’t count ankle-biters out. They bark and attract a lot of attention.

Poor security features

For those who do strike at night, poor lighting makes it harder for neighbors to see what they’re doing.

They also like homes without security systems (or without engaged security systems) and with no surveillance cameras. But pros may be more willing to take on these features.

Easy accessibility

In some areas, side or back entries are the most common access point. In others, it’s the front door. This probably reflects regional architectural differences. Either way, houses with entry points weakened by disrepair, residents who leave doors or windows unlocked routinely, or homes with other weakened security (like broken alarms) are more likely to be successfully burgled.

Houses with curb appeal

Larger and more well-maintained homes with signs of wealth (like expensive vehicles) tell thieves there may be a better payoff at your house. But the most expensive houses likely have security features that make them unappealing to most thieves.

Social homeowners

Of the people quizzed in a recent Nationwide Insurance survey, 41 percent of homeowners aged 18 to 34 years post photos and updates on social media while they’re on vacation.

ABC News reported the story of a woman who was burgled by an old friend she hadn’t seen in years when she posted about a concert on Facebook, and another man was robbed after tweeting about his vacation plans.

But it doesn’t stop there. The DOJ publication notes that burglars often know their victims. They may be casual acquaintances (like the lady who does your nails or a close friend or relative of hers), people who provide a service (like a gardener or technician), neighbors or even friends or relatives of friends. All of these people may know a bit more about your routine than the average person (or are people you or an acquaintance of yours may reveal information about your plans to).

Non-urban areas

According to The National Center for Victims of Crime, reported burglary rates are higher in cities outside metropolitan areas. Rural areas in particular present their own challenges. According to The National Sheriffs’ Association, those who live in isolated rural areas have unique challenges due to the isolation and expensive equipment that’s often left unprotected by the owners (in an area less patrolled by officers).


Caring for a Dog with Food Allergies

WebMD reveals the signs, symptoms, and triggers for food allergies in dogs.

Your dog is itching like crazy and shaking their head constantly. Your vet just told you it could be a food allergy. What does that mean? To find out, we talked to Susan Wynn, an internationally known expert on holistic pet care. Wynn is former president of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association, a clinical resident in nutrition at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine and author of four textbooks on integrative practice, focusing on dietary supplements such as nutraceuticals and herbs.

Q: How common are food allergies in dogs?

A: Ten percent of all allergy cases in dogs are food allergies. Dogs also can suffer from food intolerance, which is different from a food allergy.

Q: What are the common signs of a food allergy?

A: Anything from chronic ear inflammation, gastrointestinal problems, and chronic diarrhea to chronic gas, licking their feet, or an itchy rear end.

Q: What are the most common things that could trigger a food allergy in my dog?

A: It’s a genetic problem, and when it’s triggered, it’s by exposure to whatever they’re allergic to. The most common allergens are beef, dairy, wheat, egg, chicken, lamb, soy, pork, rabbit, and fish. And, most dogs are usually allergic to more than one thing.

A: It’s a multi-factorial thing, but certainly you have to have a genetic predisposition to develop allergies. The environment can affect it, too.

There’s a lot of research going on right now to determine what, in early puppyhood or early kittenhood, makes the immune system more likely to express that trait. There’s an immune education process happening in the first few weeks of life. Young animals treated with antibiotics could potentially be predisposed to problems later in life because antibiotics change the environment inside the gut, which is the largest immune organ in the body. That could be a predisposing cause, but then the trigger would be being exposed to the allergen.

Q: Are some breeds more prone to food allergies?

A: There are some, but I think it depends on whom you talk to. It also can vary by country or part of the country. It may be as simple as what breeders, with their line-bred family of animals, are in your area. So if you have a very prominent breeder who is breeding a line known for their allergies, you’re going to think that breed commonly has food allergies. In my experience, retrievers, German shepherds. Dachshunds, cocker spaniels, and rex cats are the most commonly affected breeds.

Q: How do I determine if my dog has food allergies, or something else is causing the problem?

A: There’s only one way to diagnose food allergies accurately, and that is an elimination diet and challenge. So what we do is take the dog off all the foods it's eating and we put him on a food that they have never had before. With all the exotic diets out there now, this can be pretty difficult. I've sent people out for alligator and yak. Once the dog has improved, we start reintroducing the old foods that we think caused the problems in the first place. If they have a reaction, which usually takes a few days to a few weeks, then we know they have a food allergy.

There’s specific testing to rule out other problems as well. For instance, you might take a sample of discharge from the ears to see if there's a problem there, or do skin testing for environmental allergies. Blood testing is not an accurate test for any allergy.

Q: Will changing my dog’s diet trigger a food allergy?

A: If the dog has been sensitized to something in that diet it could. There’s no way of knowing if your dog has been sensitized to an ingredient, though.

Q: Can my dog suddenly develop a food allergy to something that they have eaten for years with no problems? Will this keep happening?

A: That’s common in food-allergic dogs. They have to be sensitized they have to have been exposed for some period of time. So, in general, they’re not going to react really dramatically the first time they eat it but a dog that has eaten a food for years could suddenly become allergic to that food.

If an elimination diet improves the pet’s clinical signs and the owner is able to find two to three diets the dog can tolerate, I recommend rotating through them every two to three months. The whole point is to keep them stable for a period of months to years so you can eventually do their challenge testing to identify what the dog is really allergic to. If you’re really lucky, then you can go back to a more normal diet and not these expensive, exotic diets.

And if they’re young enough, food allergies sometimes do resolve themselves.

Q: How do I treat a dog with food allergies?

A: You can try to cover up the signs, but if you’ve got a disease that’s caused by what you put in your mouth every day, the best treatment is to stop putting that in your mouth every day. I use herbs all the time, and I do think they can help, but not as much as avoiding what’s causing the problem.

Q: Should I cook for my dog, rather than buy them food? What about a raw diet, will that help?

A: The upside of a cooked diet is you know exactly what’s going in it and you can control that. The disadvantage is it’s more trouble and, unfortunately, most people won’t do it right. They will leave off supplements, they won’t follow instructions, and they’ll end up giving their dog or cat an unbalanced diet.

There’s nothing magical about raw diets. Some dogs do very well on them and some dogs do not do very well on them. The protein structure might be different from that in a cooked or processed diet and that does make a difference for some dogs. But it’s not common enough that we need to tell everybody they should try a raw diet.

Q: Is there anything I can do to keep my puppy from developing food allergies?

A: I don’t think anyone is going to tell you that you can prevent food allergies if your puppy is predisposed. My opinion is that if you provide a diet that has some variety in it, so they’re getting a natural rotation, you’re maintaining gut health by doing that.

I do recommend for young puppies and kittens that people put them on probiotics. I’m very concerned about the use of antibiotics in growing animals. I think it messes up their gut balance and I think it may make them more likely to become allergic over time. So for puppies, I try to avoid antibiotics and use probiotics up to six months to one year of age and give them a diet that’s fairly high in variety.


4. Demonstrate your ability to properly prepare two different kinds of hot cereal, a healthful hot drink, and cook eggs in two different ways other than frying.

  • 5 cups water
  • 1 cup hominy grits
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey, brown sugar, or maple syrup (optional)
  1. Bring water to a rapid boil in a saucepan.
  2. Gradually pour in the hominy grits and stir.
  3. Add the butter and stir.
  4. Cook for 20 minutes, or until the water is absorbed.

Grits may be sweetened with honey, brown sugar, maple syrup, or jelly. Grits can also be flavored with cheese, sunnyside up egg, or vegetarian sausage. Serve while hot.

  • 1/2 cup (120 mL) rolled oats or other grain
  • 3/4 cup (180 mL) water
  • 3/4 cup (180 mL) milk or soy milk
  1. Mix oats and water, then bring to a boil covered with a lid.
  2. Once bubbling, stir and reduce temperature to the lowest possible to maintain simmering. Replace lid and watch carefully to prevent boiling over.
  3. Stir every minute or so. After five minutes, remove lid, stir thoroughly and add 3/4 cup of milk.
  4. Mix through, and keep stirring until fully mixed.
  5. Serve and add sugar, brown sugar, maple syrup, a pinch of salt, honey or inverted sugar syrup to taste.
  • 1/2 gallon apple juice or unfermented apple cider
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 2 whole cloves
  • 2 sticks cinnamon
  • 2 allspice berries
  • 1/2 orange peel
  • 1/2 lemon peel

Pour the apple juice and maple syrup into a large pan. Place the cloves, cinnamon sticks, allspice, and citrus peelings on the center of a piece of cheesecloth. Bundle it up and tie it up with a piece of string. Place the bundle in the apple juice and cook for 5 to 10 minutes over moderate heat - do not let it boil. Turn off the heat (or turn it way down) and discard the spice bundle. Ladle the cider into mugs and if desired, put another cinnamon stick in each cup.

  • 6 to 8 large eggs, depending on appetite and number of people
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Using eggs that have been in the fridge for several days (but are still before the date on the shell or carton), will make it easier to peel the eggs once they are cooked. If you are using really fresh eggs, rather than commodity eggs from the store, you may have to keep them three weeks or more before they will be easily peeled.

Two major problems arise when making hard-boiled eggs: overcooking and cracking.

You can tell if an egg is overcooked by examining the yolk. If the egg was cooked too long the yolk will be a pale yellow surrounded by a green or greenish band. Overcooked eggs also give off the faint odor of sulfur.

Cracking of eggs while cooking is caused by the too rapid expansion of pressure in the air pocket inside the egg. Eggshell is porous and will allow the air to escape as the egg heats and its contents expand. However if the egg heats too quickly the air does not have time to escape. This causes an uneven pressure on the inside of the shell as the air pocket heats at a different rate than the white. The egg then cracks, often leaking into the cooking water.

There is one solution to these two problems. Place the eggs to be cooked in a pan or pot of cold water. There should be enough water to cover all the eggs completely. The pot should be large enough for all the eggs to lay on their sides with a little space between them. If they do touch it is alright, but there should be enough space that they don't have to be touching to fit.

Turn the stove on and bring the water to a rolling boil. Notice as you heat the eggs, you will see tiny air bubbles coming from the base (the big end) of the egg. This is air from the air pocket escaping. Once the water has been at a rolling boil for about a minute and a half, turn the stove off. Allow the water to gradually cool with the eggs in it. After about twenty minutes the water should be cool enough to reach in with your hands and remove the eggs. Not only have you allowed the air to escape, preventing the egg from cracking, but by gradually heating and then cooling the eggs they won't have overcooked. By the time the center of the egg has become hot enough to start really cooking the water will be cooling it down.

  1. Preheat a large metal or non-stick skillet to medium heat.
  2. Whisk eggs and cottage cheese together in a small container place in skillet.
  3. Sprinkle Mexican Seasoning on eggs (to taste).
  4. As eggs begin to cook start folding together, turning as needed, until done cooking.

Scopolamine is a drug that causes amnesia and suggestibility. The really scary thing about this drug is how easy it is to administer. Criminals in Colombia have been blowing powder into the faces of victims, who then happily empty their bank accounts or assist in the robbing of their own house. So Rimonabant was born, a drug that works in the same places in the brain as cannabis but has exactly the opposite effect.??This strategy worked and the drug was approved for weight loss. Rimonabant was also found to have opposite effects to weed in other areas too. It increases sperm motility, and improves short-term memory in animals. Unfortunately, it has some pretty serious side effects.

Heroin has caused untold levels of despair, suffering and bad PSAs. So you might be surprised to learn that scientists sat down and developed a drug 5000 times as strong.
Etorphine is a drug that works in the same way as heroin and morphine, but never really took off on the streets because it&rsquos too potent to do anything besides instantly kill humans.
How potent? Its only use is to sedate large animals, and 1/100th of a gram can knock out a 3000 kg (6614 lbs) elephant. Contact with skin can be enough to cause an overdose in humans, so whenever the drug is used an assistant with an antidote has to be ready to Pulp Fiction you in case of an accident.

DNP burns fat in humans so well, it raised body temperatures and cooks the user from the inside.

2,4-Dinitrophenol or DNP is a drug that screws up the way your body uses energy. Normally the food you eat is turned into energy to keep your heart beating and let your muscles move and really important stuff like that. If you eat too much energy, the excess is stored as fat on your butt and stomach until there&rsquos not enough food around and it&rsquos needed.

DNP is a drug that was used for weight loss in the 1930s, because it totally screwed with the way your body used energy so that energy is used up without any effort on your part. You can eat all the fried chicken that you want and all the energy will be burnt up while you sit around playing X-Box.

While this may sound like the best invention ever, there&rsquos a drawback. The drug was discontinued in 1938 because people were literally cooking from the inside, with massively raised body temperature, heart rate and sweating that was often fatal.
The drug is available through online pharmacies and people are still taking it, and it&rsquos still killing them.

Dimethylheptylpyran is a US military designed marijuana so potent that a 1mg dose can leave soldiers unable to perform their duties for up to 3 days.

From the 1950s to the 1970s the US military had a fun little side project at the Edgewood Arsenal. They would give soldiers various drugs and chemical agents to see what happened. One of these was a super potent version of marijuana called &lsquodimethylheptylpyran&rsquo or DMHP.
This stuff gives all the classic signs of being baked like red eyes, hunger and sluggishness. However rather than a couple of joints, 0.0002 g is all the DMHP you need to get the average person staring at their shoes and giggling. At 1mg doses soldiers were completely unable to perform their duties for up to 3 days. The boffins over at Edgewood thought they had stumbled across the ideal non-lethal incapacitating agent.
You could just spray the enemy base with DMHP and walk in an hour later while everyone is watching Friends reruns and eating Cheetos. By the late 1970s more effective chemical warfare agents had been weaponised, and the research was stopped.

Krokodil is a cheaply produced drug that has similar effects to heroin, but with side effects that include literally eating away at the flesh of the user.

In Russia, heroin addicts who can&rsquot afford their next hit have found an easier and much more horrifying way to get a fix. A series of reactions with over the counter painkillers and easily available chemicals can create a drug called desomorphine that has similar effects to heroin.
As you can probably guess, cooking up painkillers, lighter fluid, and cleaning oils in a kitchen doesn&rsquot result in a pure product. A brown gunk called Krokodil is produced. The mixture was named for its tendency to turn the skin of users scaly and reptilian as the toxic by-products eat away at the flesh. Heavy use leaves flesh grey and dead, sometimes rotting away to the bone. The results are truly disturbing.

How could the Hotcakes not be a popular item at McDonald's, one might ask? To be fully transparent, we're not sure if this is one of the least liked menu items, but we have suspicions. For example, a former employee from McDonald's contributed this to a recent Reddit thread, which asked: McDonald's workers of Reddit, what's one food item everyone should avoid?

"I worked at a McDonalds myself in the past, I'd say the hotcakes because they are frozen [things] that we microwave, the only reason they don't call them pancakes is because they aren't cooked in a frypan, so they don't get sued," said the user.

Yikes. So much for warm, fluffy flapjacks.

39% in U.S. survey report feeling somewhat or completely addicted to social media

Meanwhile, 15 percent of respondents 23 to 38 years old told researchers that being addicted to social media described them completely. Another 37 percent reported feelings of addiction.

Across all age ranges surveyed (only adults were surveyed), 9 percent said that being addicted described them completely. Just 1 percent of people 55 to 64 years old said that addiction described them completely, while 21 percent said it did somewhat or completely.
